Acer palmatum dissectum 'Orangeola'

(Zone 5) Grows to about 4’ tall and 3’ wide in 10 years, but mature height can reach 8’. Has deeply lobed, serrated leaves that are green-purple and turn brilliant orange-red in the fall.

Calycanthus floridus

(Zone 4) A dense, rounded deciduous shrub which grows 6-10′ tall and 6-12’ wide. Features very fragrant, brown to reddish-brown flowers in May. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, including clay. Prune immediately after flowering to maintain compactness.

Calycanthus floridus var. purpureus RED ZEPPELIN®

(Zone 4). Grows 4-8’ tall by 4-6’ wide. Orange-red flowers in late spring/early summer with striking purple foliage.

Cephalanthus SUGAR SHACK®

(Zone 4) Grows very well in wet soils. Has an open-rounded habit that does not require much pruning. Grows 6-12’ tall. Tiny, fragrant white flowers appear in early to mid-summer. Flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies.

Ceanothus americanus

(Zone 4) Easily grown in well-drained soils and withstands drought conditions. Has a compact, rounded shape and typically grows 3-4′ tall and 3-5’ wide. Has tiny white, fragrant flowers in late spring. Young twigs are noticeably yellow and stand out in winter.

Cornus florida

(Zone 5). A small deciduous tree that typically grows 15-30’ tall and wide. Prefers moist soils and partial shade. Blooms in early spring with showy white bracts that give the appearance of large white flowers. Leaves have an attractive red fall color.

Cornus racemosa

(Zone 4) Grows 10-15′ tall and has white flowers in late spring. Leaves turn purplish/red in fall with red stems persists into early winter. Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions.

Cornus sericea (Red Osier)

(Zone 2) Grows 7-9’ tall. Has yellowish-white flowers in May-early June followed by bluish-white fruit. Foliage fall color is redish-purple and has attractive red stems in winter.

Cornus sericea 'Kelseyi'

(Zone 2) Grows 2-2.5’ tall and wide. Foliage has purple-redish fall color. Young twigs are bright red in winter.

Diervilla KODIAK® ORANGE

(Zone 4) Grows 3-4’ tall and wide. Has an attractive form and yellow flowers. Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions. Prune immediately after flowering as needed.

Diervilla KODIAK® RED 2.0

(Zone 3) Grows 3-4’ tall and wide. Intense red fall color. Long blooming yellow flowers in summer and fall.

Forsythia x int. 'Courtasol' Gold Tide

(Zone 5) Compact habit which grows 1-2’ tall and 1-4’ wide. Showy yellow flowers in March-April. Has more flower production when grown in full sun.

Fothergilla major 'Blue Shadow'

(Zone 5) Zone 4-6’ tall and wide. Fragrant white flowers in April-May. Blue-green foliage with excellent orange-red-yellow fall color.

Hamamelis vernalis

(Zone 4) Grows 6-10’ tall and 8-15’ wide. Flowers prior to the emergence of the foliage in a variety of colors ranging from pale yellow to dark reddish purple. Has showy, fragrant flowers and stems provide winter interest.

Hydrangea macro. 'Glowing Embers'

(Zone 6) Typically grows 3-6’ tall and wide. Grows best in part shade but will tolerate full sun if kept evenly moist. Has deep pink-red flowers in July-August.

(Zone 3). Grows 36-60 inches tall and wide. A larger version of Bobo. Comact plant with large white blooms. Flowers turn lime green as they age.

(Zone 5) Grows 2-3’ tall and wide. Soil pH affects the flower color. Color is more blue in highly acidic soils and more pink in alkaline soils. Add aluminum sulfate to the soil to make the flowers bluer or add lime to the soil to make the flowers pinker. Start treatments late fall or early spring. Blooms June-August. Blooms on old wood. Little pruning is needed.

Hypericum kalmianum SUNNY BOULEVARD®

(Zone 4) A small dense, evergreen shrub that rows 2-3’ tall and 2-4’ wide. Has narrow bluish-green leaves with yellow flowers in mid-late summer. Prune if needed after flowering.Tolerates poor soils.

Lindera benzoin

(Zone 4) A deciduous shrub with a rounded habit and grows 6-12’ tall and wide. Has fragrant greenish-yellow flowers in early spring before leaves emerge. Female plants need a pollinator in order to produce red drupes. Oblong leaves turn an attractive yellow in fall.

Symphoricarpos PROUD BERRY®

(Zone 3) Grows 3-4’ tall and wide. A rounded habit with bluish-green leaves. Unique large pink fruit in fall.

Syringa vulgaris (Common Purple)

(Zone 3) Grows 12-16’ tall and 8-12’ wide. Very fragrant lilac-purple flowers in mid-late spring. Flowers are 6-8” long. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Syringa vulgaris 'Madame Lemoine'

(Zone 4) Grows 8-10’ tall and 9-10’ wide. Large showy fragrant white panicle flowers which bloom for 3-4 weeks in late spring.

Syringa vulgaris 'President Grevy'

(Zone 3) Grows 8-14’ tall and 3-7’ wide. Light blue-purple showy fragrant flowers in mi-late spring (May). Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Thuja occidentalis STING™

(Zone 3) Grows 15-20’ tall and 12-18’ wide. Classic green foliage with a very slender shape that will fit easily into any size bed.

Vaccinium 'Bluecrop'

(Zone 5) Grows 6-8’ tall and wide. Foliage turns bright shades of coppery red in the fall. Blooms white urn-shaped flowers bloom in spring. The flowers can also have a pale pink tinge. Has sweet round dark blue-purple berries.

Vaccinium 'Duke'

(Zone 5) Grows 5-7’ tall and wide. White flowers appear in May. Flowers are followed by medium to large, light blue blueberries which ripen in early season (early to mid June).

Vaccinium 'Jersey'

(Zone 5) Grows 6-8’ tall and wide. Best grown in acidic soils (pH of 4.8-5.2). Blueberries are self fertile but will have a better yield if cross pollinated. Best to plant more than one variety that will bloom at the same time. Round sweet berries are dark blue and purple.

Viburnum lentago

(Zone 2) A large upright deciduous shrub that grows 14-16’ tall and 6-12’ wide. Has non-fragrant showy white flowers in spring. Has blue-black drupes in fall that last into winter as food for birds and wildlife. Variable fall colors from greenish/yellow – redish/purple.

Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Shasta'

(Zone 5) Grows 6-8’ tall and 9-12’ wide. Dark green leaves that turn burgundy red-purple in the fall. Has large showy non fragrant white flowers in May-July.

Viburnum prunifolium

(Zone 3) Grows 12-15’ tall and 6-12’ wide. Has non-fragrant white flowers in flat-topped cymes in spring. After flowers, blue-black, berry-like drupes appear and last into winter. Leaves turn attractive shades of red and purple in fall. Fruits are edible.

Viburnum sieboldii 'Seneca'

(Zone 4) Grows 20-30’ tall and 10-12’ wide. In late May is covered with clusters tiny off-white flowers. Leaves are fragrant when crushed.

Viburnum trilobum 'Bailey Compact'

(Zone 3) Grows 5’ tall and wide. New leaves have a red edge and turn deep red in fall. Dense and compact habit. Creamy white flowers in May.

Viburnum trilobum 'Wentworth'

(Zone 3) Grows 8-10’ tall and wide. Trident shaped leaves that turn fiery red in fall. Small white flowers that attract butterflies and red berries in the fall and winter that serve as food for birds.

Viburnum x pragense

(Zone 5) Grows 10-12’ tall and wide. Pink buds with fragrant ivory flowers in May. Showy fruit that start off red and change to glossy black. Berries often last into December.

Weigela florida MIDNIGHT WINE SHINE®

(Zone 4) Mounded compact shrub that grows 1-1.5’ tall and 2-2.5’ wide. Profuse dark pink flowers in spring. Leaves vary in color from green to purple.

Weigela florida 'Minor Black'

(Zone 4) Grows 1-2’ tall and wide. Rosy pink flowers in spring with green-maroon leaves.
