Meet the Owners
Dan Shonts and his wife, Erin, are the proud owners of D & B Plants, joined in this venture by their three boys, Ezekiel, Isaac, and Ezra. Dan and Erin took over the business in January 2023 from founders Debbie and Bob Kuszmaul, who established D & B Plants as a trusted name in quality and care. With over two decades of experience in the horticulture industry, Dan was eager to continue this legacy, combining his expertise with a dedication to high-quality plant material.
Both Dan and Erin have deep roots in horticulture. Dan holds a degree in horticulture from Michigan State University, while Erin earned hers from Murray State University in Kentucky. They met while working together at a retail nursery and landscaping company in mid-Michigan, where their shared passion for plants and commitment to quality laid the foundation for their journey.
Erin’s Journey: Erin spent six years as a perennial plug grower at Walters Gardens, specializing in propagation from tissue culture and cuttings. After taking time to focus on family, she returned to horticulture as a lead grower at Andy Mast Greenhouses, where she managed propagation for Mums, Poinsettias, and spring annuals. Her experience in plant care and quality control complements the team at D & B Plants.
Dan’s Journey: Dan built his expertise as a production farm manager at Great Lakes Landscape Supply, overseeing the cultivation of trees, shrubs, and perennials. As a longtime customer of D & B Plants, he valued the consistent quality and attentive service provided by Bob. So, when the chance arose to take over the business, he was thrilled to bring their combined experience to a company he’d long admired.
